Rental bond loans in WA
Department of Housing and Works's Bond Assistance Loan helps renters on low incomes with a bond. Interest-free loan for the bond plus 2 weeks' rent in advance.
What it covers
- The bond plus 2 weeks' rent in advance, both as an interest-free loan.
- The amount depends on how many tenants there are and how they're related. A couple, or an adult with a child, can get up to $1,700 plus 2 weeks' rent.
- If you've already paid the bond, you may be reimbursed within the first 8 weeks with your lease and receipts.
Who can get it
- You must meet the scheme's eligibility rules, set out in its policy.
- An existing debt to the Housing Authority doesn't rule you out, but applications are then at the department's discretion.
Paying it back
- The loan is paid to your landlord, and you repay the department during the tenancy.
- When you move out, the landlord pays any amount still owing to the department and refunds the rest to you.
How to apply
- Use the department's application checklist and evidence factsheet, then apply through its bond assistance loans page.

If you don't qualify
A personal loan can cover a bond and moving costs, but it costs interest and fees, so treat it as a last resort after the free options. If you're getting a bond back from your current rental, you can use it to pay the loan off early.
If you get Centrelink payments, ask about an advance payment, and check you're receiving Commonwealth Rent Assistance. The free National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 can help you work out a plan.
