Rental bond loans in the ACT
Housing ACT's Rental bond help helps renters on low incomes with a bond. Interest-free loan for up to 100% of the bond, repaid over up to 2 years.
What it covers
- Up to 100% of the bond for a private rental.
- No interest.
Who can get it
- Aged 16 or over, renting in the ACT and living in the property.
- Income under Housing ACT's threshold, which is reviewed every six months and goes up for each dependent child.
- Less than $10,000 in cash or savings, or $15,000 for a joint application.
- You can apply before you find a place, but not after you've paid the bond.
Paying it back
- Repay weekly, fortnightly or monthly over up to 2 years.
How to apply
- Apply online with an ACT Digital Account, or in person at a Housing ACT service centre.
- Couples apply together. Housemates each apply for their own share.

If you don't qualify
A personal loan can cover a bond and moving costs, but it costs interest and fees, so treat it as a last resort after the free options. If you're getting a bond back from your current rental, you can use it to pay the loan off early.
If you get Centrelink payments, ask about an advance payment, and check you're receiving Commonwealth Rent Assistance. The free National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 can help you work out a plan.
