Rental bond loans in Victoria
Homes Victoria's RentAssist bond loan helps renters on low incomes with a bond. Loan for all or part of the bond, usually repaid from the bond refund when you move out.
What it covers
- All or part of the bond, for people on low incomes who can't pay it themselves.
- If the loan covers only part of the bond, you or another renter pay the rest.
Who can get it
- You must meet Homes Victoria's eligibility criteria, including income and asset limits, and be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
Paying it back
- There are usually no regular repayments. When the tenancy ends, the bond is refunded to Homes Victoria.
- If the landlord keeps some of the bond, for unpaid rent or damage, you're asked to repay that amount.
How to apply
- Check eligibility and apply through Homes Victoria's RentAssist bond loan page.
- If you're approved, you get a voucher. Check its details, then give it to your landlord or agent to lodge with the Residential Tenancies Bond Authority before it expires.

If you don't qualify
A personal loan can cover a bond and moving costs, but it costs interest and fees, so treat it as a last resort after the free options. If you're getting a bond back from your current rental, you can use it to pay the loan off early.
If you get Centrelink payments, ask about an advance payment, and check you're receiving Commonwealth Rent Assistance. The free National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 can help you work out a plan.
