Rental bond loans in the NT
Territory Housing's Private rental bond assistance helps renters on low incomes with a bond. Interest-free loan of up to 4 weeks' rent, plus 2 weeks' rent in advance, repaid within 18 months.
What it covers
- Up to 4 weeks' rent as a bond, with the option of 2 weeks' rent in advance.
- An interest-free loan. If you share, you can only apply for your share.
Who can get it
- Aged 18 or over, and an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or holder of a Special Category or Temporary Protection visa.
- You've lived in the NT for the 3 months before you apply.
- The rent is no more than 53% of your income, and your household income and assets are under the limits.
- It isn't available to social housing applicants or tenants.
Paying it back
- Repay over 18 months or less, under a repayment agreement.
- When the tenancy ends, you can repay the balance from your returned bond.
- If money is tight, you can ask to pay $10 a week for up to 6 weeks, twice during the loan.
How to apply
- Fill in the bond assistance form and take it to your local housing office with photo ID, proof of income, assets and 3 months' NT residence.
- An approval lasts 6 weeks. Once you find a place, bring in the rental agreement and the loan is paid to your landlord or agent.

If you don't qualify
A personal loan can cover a bond and moving costs, but it costs interest and fees, so treat it as a last resort after the free options. If you're getting a bond back from your current rental, you can use it to pay the loan off early.
If you get Centrelink payments, ask about an advance payment, and check you're receiving Commonwealth Rent Assistance. The free National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 can help you work out a plan.
