Rental bond loans in SA

SA Housing Trust's Private Rental Assistance helps renters on low incomes with a bond. A bond guarantee rather than cash, and a grant for rent in advance.

What it covers

  • A bond guarantee: the Trust promises the landlord it will cover legitimate claims at the end of the tenancy, so you don't pay the bond in cash.
  • Rent in advance, as a grant.
  • If the landlord makes a claim on the guaranteed bond that's paid, the amount becomes a debt you owe the Trust.

Who can get it

  • You meet the program's income and asset limits.
  • Your share of the rent is no more than 50% of your assessable income before tax.
  • You have your own income, can prove your income, identity and rent, and the property is in South Australia.
  • You don't owe the Trust more than $1,000, unless a repayment arrangement is in place.
  • Overseas students and people with a financial interest in residential property can't apply.

Paying it back

  • There's nothing to repay unless the landlord's claim on the guarantee is paid.

How to apply

  • Your landlord or agent completes the owner's declaration and gives you the reference number, which you email to [email protected].
  • Or apply in person at any SA Housing Trust office. Enquiries: 131 299, Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5:30pm.

If you don't qualify

A personal loan can cover a bond and moving costs, but it costs interest and fees, so treat it as a last resort after the free options. If you're getting a bond back from your current rental, you can use it to pay the loan off early.

If you get Centrelink payments, ask about an advance payment, and check you're receiving Commonwealth Rent Assistance. The free National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 can help you work out a plan.
